Happy Monday Everyone!
Today we had our last Eureka Science lesson. We were taught all about "Buzzing Bees" today. Eureka offers summer camps for children. All of the information was sent home today. If you need a bursary application for Eureka science camps, I have left them on the clip outside my classroom door.
Please take a look at the last post I did on Friday. It has the information about tomorrow's field trip to Isobel lake. The weather forecast calls for rain so please ensure your child is properly dressed for the weather. Please ensure your child is on-time tomorrow. Parent volunteers are asked to please be here at 8:30 sharp as we have alot of information to go over. Parent volunteers are asked to follow the bus up to Isobel lake so if you need to get a coffee please do so before you come to the school at 8:30. It is a good idea to carpool!

Dear
Parents and Guardians,
As you know, our class will be going on a school bus to Isobel Lake on Tuesday, June 5th. We will leave the school at 9:00am.
These are the things your child will require on the day of our trip to ensure comfort and energy:
1. A lunch in an appropriate container with two drinks (reusable containers are preferred).
2. A sun hat, sunscreen and insect repellent.
3. A light jacket or shell and a light weight sweater, rain gear (be ready for all types of weather).
4. A small knapsack to carry all of the above. This is important so your child can have his/her hands free to explore during our field studies.
5. Comfortable clothes for hiking: long pants, short sleeved shirt, socks and running shoes (no sandals, flipflops, shorts or dresses). The students will be hiking the interpretive trail that is 3km long around the lake.
Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to help out on our field trip. Because there will be two classes travelling on the bus with limited seating, parent volunteers are asked to carpool and meet us at Isobel Lake. On the morning of our field trip, we will help arrange carpooling groups for parents, and will provide a map with directions to our destination. Parent helpers are asked to meet Mrs. Galloway in her classroom at 8:30am to go over the itinerary for the day. Parents will be working with a small group of students throughout the day.
I look forward to our trip next week. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Today we had our first visit from Eureka! Eureka is a Science program put on by TRU Science students. Today we were taught all about sounds. Sound is vibration that travels through space as a wave. Two major properties of these waves are amplitude and frequency. Amplitude is the size of the wave, which is related to loudness, while frequency is the number of waves per second, which is related to pitch. Larger amplitude means louder sound. Higher frequency means a higher pitch.
Eureka offers awesome summer camps. Some information about their summer programs was sent home today. I also have made copies of the Eureka Bursary application forms. If you require one I have left them on the clip outside my classroom door.

- Sunscreen (the weather is supposed to be nice)

Please
do not bring any personal fishing equipment. All of the fishing
gear is provided for us. Many students have asked if they can bring
cameras and that is fine but your child will be responsible for his
or her own camera. I have asked that all other electronic devices
stay home. Thank you for your cooperation.
We
will be leaving the school at 8:40 sharp and returning back
around 1:00pm. The directions are as follows:
- Take Hwy 5A south from Kamloops toward Merritt
- At Knutsford Junction turn right onto Long Lake Rd.
- Go 3.4 Km and turn right on Edith Lake Rd.
- Go 4.3 km to lake on good gravel road
A
map will also be provided to our drivers tomorrow.
On
another note... With the warmer weather upon us, many students have
started wearing sandals and flip flops to school which is fine. I do
ask that students also pack a pair of running shoes for gym and
outdoor activities. Thank you for your cooperation.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I want to start off by thanking everyone for their continued patience during this time of teacher job action. I know this week has been very disruptive for many of you and your support is greatly appreciated. Due to the short week, we will not be doing spelling this week.
I will be teaching new sight words tomorrow. They are as follows:
Grade 1: swim, run, fly, what
Grade 2: star, whale, shark
Due to the uncertainty of future job action at this time, I have decided to double up some of the special helper days. In other words, if your child missed his/her special helper day due to missed school, he/she will still get to showcase his/her show and tell item to the class and will share the responsibilities with another member of the class. I hope this make sense.
Have a fantastic evening!

Today in Science we continued our study of solids, liquids and gas. I made a "special" substance that acted as a solid and a liquid. Most of the students wanted the recipe to make this "special" substance at home so here it is:
1 cup of cornstarch
1.5 - 2 cups of water
food colouring (optional)
Mix together and enjoy!
We will be learning more sight words tomorrow.
Grade 2 sight words: again, teacher, us
Grade 1 sight words: likes, plays
Just a reminder to continue practicing math facts at home.

Sometime this week your child will be bringing home the contents of their Math duotang. All of the work in it is work done to date. So far we have worked on the following concepts: Review of numbers, Combinations of 9, 10, 11 and 12, Patterns, Missing addends, Place Value to 100 (The grade 2 students did counting to 200). Please do not be concerned if all of the pages are not complete. We do quite a bit of oral and group work in Math and I don't always require all of the written work to be completed during the math period. You will know if your child's math page is complete because the top right hand corner of the page will be cut.
Have a great evening!
